Amazon Kindle Serials...The Decision

I've received a few emails about Kindle Serials since my last post. In the end, only you can decide what is best for you. Part of this blog's ethos is to encourage individualism. This whole thing came about because I gave out some information on a forum and was told I was wrong just because what I said challenged some people's views on short fiction and serialized fiction particularly.

The Secret Lair exists because there must be a place where ideas can be exchanged freely without being shouted down by people locked into a set of blind beliefs.

The Lair is about striking out on your own and seeing where the path takes you. It is about experimentation and exploration. Take what you need from here and use it to benefit yourself.

I may submit to Kindle Serials myself. Why? Why not? There is a lot of specualtion about Amazon's payment structure but no one has provided any real facts. The only way to know the facts is to submit a serial and get a contract.

If you submit and get rejected, what have you lost? Nothing. You will have two episodes of a series written and a plan for the rest. Publish it yourself.

The only thing I'm not sure about is whether Amazon are actually accepting the type of episodic fiction we are talking about here. They seem to be talking about 'serialized novels', which is simply a novel released in chunks. So I'm not too sure if pitching an episodic series at them would work. But..as I said, The Lair is about experimentation and I won't know until I try.

  1. Well, I doublt then intend for this to be chapters of an actual novel, since few writers write 10k-plus chapters.

At $4.99 it might be worth it, but not at $1.99. I'll wait for the intro price to pass into history before I consider it. If the story has to exclusive to Amazon, I'll need to know for how long. I suspect it will be for longer than the 90 days of Select.

  2. Hey, Tom

I agree...not a chapter but a 10k 'chunk'. It seemed that way when I read the book descriptions anyway.

Since Amazon are working this program under their publishing umbrella (Thomas & Mercer), the payment is more likely to be an advance then royalties once the advance is earned out. I would suspect the advance would be paid in installments as each episode is delivered.
